I've asked a few update related questions over the years and mostly
gotten
no answers. I now update only occasionally and expect to have to reload
and reconfigure from time to time.

That's just the way it goes. Setup doesn't even recover from failed
file transfers very well. Often blows the whole system or causes
setup to be unable to run again, requiring a fresh install. A setup
error *usually* means starting over from scratch.

Not a very production-friendly system.

Well if it is important to you, you test an update on a parrellel
system. I do that at home as I once did at work. Remember you are
part of the effort and a beta tester.

No pain, no gain.

I'd recommend reporting the details of problems you encounter with
"setup.exe", if nothing else. It's always possible you're seeing a
bug that could be resolved with some effort.

Thanks. Everything is OK again.

I don't have to restart during work, with multiple applications
open.

This is the silliest thing I've ever heard. It is true that if an
installation of Cygwin wants to overwrite a file that you currently have
loaded (e.g. Cygwin installs a new version of bash.exe and you're
running bash.exe) then you do have to reboot, once! You do not need to
update Cygwin everyday however. I fail to see why you thought this would
solve the problem you stated. And we can all see how this practice just
got you into a pickle.

Yes.

One way - rerun setup.exe and choose a mirror that has caught up to the
upstream reversion (in my testing, at least ftp://mirrors.kernel.org has
done so; the rest will do so within 24 hours or so).

The other way - rerun setup.exe, then click the 'View' button until Full
is shown, then scroll down to cygwin, then click the 'New' column until
1.5.25-12 shows. In other words, intentionally downgrade cygwin back to
its last stable version.

/bin/xterm: Can't execvp /usr/bin/bash: No such file or directory
cygwin warning:
  MS-DOS style path detected: c:\ruby\bin\inputrc.euro
  Preferred POSIX equivalent is: /cygdrive/c/ruby/bin/inputrc.euro
CYGWIN environment variable option "nodosfilewarning" turns off this warning.
Consult the user's guide for more details about POSIX paths:
    http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/using.html#using-pathnames
bash-3.2$

I just want to use it. I don't have time to follow every detail
of the development.

Because Cygwin sometimes forces me to restart the whole system
after I install an additional program, I have developed the habit
of updating Cygwin every start of a work day.

I really hate it when things just break after an update.
