I'm using Cygwin to provide the UNIX utilities such as sed, awk, cut etc. to a Windows server. This process works correctly on our dev server, but when using the same shells and Cygwin install on our prod box these tools randomly segfault.
The processes will work a number of times (seemingly random), but after a few runs will invariably begin to segfault as shown below, the only solution is to bounce the box and we get a few more runs before futher segfaults.
Exception: STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION at eip=8B909090

What is causing the segfaults and how can it be resolved?

I have completely disabled all non-essential services that may affect Cygwin, but we are still getting the random segfaults.
Also we have an identical physical (e.g. non VMWare) machine running the same tools and version of Cygwin which does not seg fault. Is it possible there is a actually a bug in Cygwin which is causing these problems when running on a virtual machine?
As virtualisation is a growing technology this could cause problems in the future

Uhhh, by definition, if the same piece of software doesn't do /exactly/
the same thing on a virtualised machine as it does on a real machine, it is
the *virtualisation* that is at fault, not the software running under it.

As virtualisation is a growing technology (as opposed to a stable and
mature technology), it still suffers from bugs.
This is not to say that putting a workaround to support buggy VMs in
cygwin would necessarily be out of the question, as long as it didn't impact
on the far greater number of users running cygwin on real hardware...
cheers,

Not to point out the potentially obvious, but have you
run memtest on the machine that is failing?
I had a machine that worked great until the user loaded up a particular
app and then it would randomly segfault. The app was not the problem, it
was a bad stick of RAM in high address space...
Just a thought.
And I do run multiple cygwin instances in a VMWare environment and
it works great - for my application mix anyways.
