I've just installed Cygwin, including the C++ compiler, and note the compiler is
version 3.4.4, whereas the current version from gnu site is 4.3.1.
To have a more current version do I have to build from sources, or is there
somewhere I can get more recent binaries?

There's plenty of discussion on this in the archives. In short, C++ 4.x
isn't fully implemented for cygwin. Current C and Fortran from gfortran
wiki should be good. Yes, you can build from sources.
