I umounted and it works, of course. I think I tried md5sum /dev/scd0 and _thought_ it hadn't worked. I probably wasn't waiting long enough and Ctrl-Ced, assuming it had either hung or was waiting for console input. Patience and understanding are good, I need more of both, I shall work on them.
