I use ssh from a dos box on windows to connect to other machines,
It works fine right after I log into windows. After a while, it
doesn't work reliably.

I type something like 'sftp example.com
I get a response 'Connecting to example.com...'
About 1 time in 10, I get the next line which is 'Password:'

This problem has been going on for at least a year, and is not specific to a
specific release of cygwin. The site 'example.com' is pingable, and all other
internet access works reliably. I would like to help debug this problem in any
way I can, to help resolve it.

Any ideas?

thanks,
jeff

I sftp'd and ssh'd to example.com from Fedora 8 and it hung on me too.
This doesn't seem like a Cygwin problem to me.

I wasn't really using example.com
example.com is reserved domain name that is to be used for examples in books
and other publications. Other domain names examples used in books sometimes
resolve to real domains, which isn't generally desired...
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example.com

I was using my personal domain, www.weasel.com
However the problem also shows up when I use sftp or ssh to machines on
my internal lan, that I know are working.

OK, as you might expect, that WJFFM. I am using Cygwin 1.7 but I don't
expect that's key. I don't see anything obvious in your cygcheck
output. Have you tried looking at the verbose output from 'ssh'
to see if it provides some clue? If you have access to the server
side and can set debugging on that too, that should help you narrow
down where the problem is.

As I said, the problem is intermittent. However, once I have the problem, it
occurs reliably. Here is some verbose output, which isn't very helpful...

U:\>sftp -v jdeifik@www.weasel.com
Connecting to www.weasel.com...
OpenSSH_5.1p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
debug1: Connecting to www.weasel.com [208.97.189.139] port 22.

U:\>sftp -v -v jdeifik@www.weasel.com
Connecting to www.weasel.com...
OpenSSH_5.1p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0
debug1: Connecting to www.weasel.com [208.97.189.139] port 22.

U:\>sftp -v -v -v jdeifik@www.weasel.com
Connecting to www.weasel.com...
OpenSSH_5.1p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0
debug1: Connecting to www.weasel.com [208.97.189.139] port 22.

I have to use control-C to stop this, as it hangs after the
'connecting to' line.

This problem is independent of where I am connecting to.

For example:

U:\>sftp -v -v -v jdeifik@torrent
Connecting to torrent...
OpenSSH_5.1p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0
debug1: Connecting to torrent [192.168.47.110] port 22.

also hangs...

jeff

Perhaps. I find this interesting though.

If I do the same thing, though I'm in bash, I get this line first:

debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh_config

> to' line.

Really. So you could debug on the server side then and see if there's
any interaction. If not, it sounds like this is a problem with an
outgoing firewall block or other BLODA <http://cygwin.com/acronyms/#BLODA>.

Here is some output when run with bash.
The first output successfully connects, the second one hangs.
Since this issue is intermittent, I suspect it might not be a BLODA issue...

I had to use control-C to stop this, as it has been hanging at this
point for 5 minutes.

So, do you have this file?

Yeah, probably true. Still worth a look though.

Yep, you're clearly getting a hang there. Have you tried this with
another machine that wouldn't be a mirror image of the one you're
using? Could be a machine specific configuration thing. If it doesn't
work for you from more than 1 machine and it's not an external source
like BLODA and it's not something on the server side, then it looks
like you're stuck trying to debug this in the source.
