Hi!

  I am following this:
http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/cygwin-sshd.html
And I am to the part where I am testing ssh with the following command:
$ ssh localhost -l test@localhost
Test is a local account and a member of the local admin group.

  I am using the following:
Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition SP2
cygwin DLL v1005.25.0.0

The sshd.log file is empty.
I am not sure what else you need to help me troubleshoot this.
I have re-installed this multiple times, this is the closest I got to getting this to work.
My goal is to setup sftp between my Mailgate appliance and this server. Mailgate is going to use the following info (and no other):
Server Name:
Server Port:
Server Path:
User Name:
Key:
Key Password:
(optional)
So, I am not even sure if I need to get this password to work, but I don't know any other way to test this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dave M

All but the part about not asking questions here if their non-standard
instructions don't work for you! Heh, moving swiftly along there ...

I think the one localhost is enough and the -l option should have the name
only shouldn't it? So try either

    ssh localhost -l test

or

    ssh test@localhost

but don't try adding a host part to the -l argument. I think that'll do it.

    cheers,

Ah, now there's a question that's entirely on-topic for the list! The
standard instructions for any cygwin package are in
/usr/share/doc/<packagename>; but these are just the standard docs that come
with whichever package it is, and there are notes specific to the Cygwin port
of any given package in /usr/share/doc/Cygwin/<packagename>.README.

So the "standard instructions" is to read
/usr/share/doc/Cygwin/openssh.README, and to follow the step-by-step
instructions found there (which more-or-less amounts to "Run the
ssh-host-config script and let it take care of everything for you"). I think
the "Important note for Windows 2003 Server users" right near the start might
be relevant to your problem.

    cheers,
      DaveK

Dave,

I checked that readme file. Um, I am not sure what it is telling me, it is not really laid out step by step. I think it would be more useful if I read it from the bottom to the top. But still, I THINK I did everything it suggested. I had run ssh-host-config before, today I ran ssh-user-config and made SYSTEM the owner of /var/empty and checked the permissions on the sshd_server account (the host-config script had set them correctly, I didn't have to do anything to the account privileges).
After that, I did this:
$ ssh localhost -l test
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
So, at least that is different. the sshd.log file in /var/log is still empty, so I don't know how to interpret this result.

Also, every time I log in to the bash shell, I get this:
Your group is currently "mkgroup". This indicates that
the /etc/group (and possibly /etc/passwd) files should be rebuilt.
See the man pages for mkpasswd and mkgroup then, for example, run
mkpasswd -l [-d] > /etc/passwd
mkgroup -l [-d] > /etc/group
Note that the -d switch is necessary for domain users.
  I have run:
mkpasswd -l > /etc/passwd
mkgroup -l > /etc/group
Both successfully (in that order) and the contents of those files "look" right, but I still keep getting that message. I don't know if this is related or not.

I hope this helps troubleshoot this issue, I am really lost and just trying to help get this resolved.

I think that'll do it.

    cheers,

SYSTEM is the proper owner for XP and W2K. For later WIndows versions, it's
cyg_server. See ssh-host-config and related scripts for all the details.
Since it's
not possible to know what you've done in the process of playing around with
this,
you'll need to manually check all the permissions and ownerships of files
mentioned
in the scripts to make sure they are set as they are supposed to be. This
is why
using the scripts is highly recommended. It's allot less work and
error-prone. ;-)

Since your user is a domain user, you need to use the '-d' flag indicated
above in
both commands.

Hi,

I had a question about this statement:

"Since your user is a domain user, you need to use the '-d' flag
indicated above in
both commands."

I am a domain user, and when I try to use the -d flag, cygwin just
hangs. I'm not sure why..?

It's probably not hanging. Most likely you have a large domain (or slow
server?). You can choose to wait so you get a complete file or you can
try using the '-c' or '-C' flags instead of '-d' to just add your domain user.

If your domain has a lot of users, then mkpasswd and mkgroup have to wait a
loooooooooong time to get all of that information back from the network. At
least, in our domain here they do. Set them to working and go for coffee.

Andrew,
Is this another thread with the same subject?
The only users I am testing with are local users on a server. I did not do the -d command, becuase I don't really need it to read domain accounts.
Sorry if I am interrupting a conversation with another poster.

Brian,
I never saw that, is there a way to get archives of this list for recent mail? Why would my subscription to this list be sending me part of the mail sent to this list?
Have there been any other posts about my problem besides Dave K's?

Larry,
I started with the just running the script and it didn't work. I have only been trying chmod and the other stuff in my previous post since then.
Will I get more help if I uninstall everything and try it again? I am just trying to get sftp to work.
  I'll run
mkpasswd -d je28004@tjanus.cap>> /etc/passwd
je28004@tjanus.cap is the domain account I am signed on with.
But the issue I am having is logging into ssh with a local account (test), not je28004.

And I will change the owner of /var/empty to sshd_server which is the local account that the sshd service uses. I have separated privileges turned on and in the readme it looked like it wanted the Owner to be SYSTEM.
Thanks for your help, any guidance will be appreciated. I have tried all the stuff I know how to do so I am boned unless someone can help me.
SFTP is the only way I can back up this device and the project I am working on is at a complete standstill until I can get a backup solution in place. Any time spent helping me is enormously appreciated.

SYSTEM is the proper owner for XP and W2K. For later WIndows versions, it's
cyg_server. See ssh-host-config and related scripts for all the details. Since it's
not possible to know what you've done in the process of playing around with this,
you'll need to manually check all the permissions and ownerships of files mentioned
in the scripts to make sure they are set as they are supposed to be. This is why
using the scripts is highly recommended. It's allot less work and error-prone. ;-)

Since your user is a domain user, you need to use the '-d' flag indicated above in
both commands.

Larry,

I can't get the mkpasswd command see my domain account, I get:
$ mkpasswd -d -u je28004@tjanus.cap>>  /etc/passwd
mkpasswd (272): [2221] The user name could not be found.

je28004@S-EXSYSLOG01 ~
$ mkpasswd -d -u janusdev\je28004>>  /etc/passwd
mkpasswd (272): [2221] The user name could not be found.

I am not sure if it matters, as the device I am backing up will be using public key authorization. But I don't know how to tell if any of this is working or should be working, so I was following that tutorial I linked in my first post. If there is a better way to test to see if my service is working correctly besides trying to ssh into it with a local account, please point me in the right direction.
I am sorry for being so vague, I really am trying to help you help me. But I am not familiar with ssh, sftp, public key authorization or Cygwin. I know a little bit of linux, but most of this is past my comfort zone.
I might try another product, but our security department has already approved this one, so I don't want to delay my project with getting another app approved. Plus, it seems like cygwin is the gold standard for sftp and is very security conscious.
Again, thanks for your assistance, any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You have the wrong syntax for the '-d' flag.
See <http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/using-utils.html#mkpasswd> or 'mkpasswd
--help'.
But if you aren't trying to log in with a domain user, then it's not
important that you
add the domain accounts at this time.

Given where you started from, it may be more direct for you to remove your
Cygwin installation (see the FAQ for details) and reinstall. Configuring 'sshd'
would likely be quicker and easier in the new installation using
'ssh-host-config'
and 'ssh-user-config' than hunting down all the wrong settings and correcting
them, assuming that's your problem. But yes, it's really impractical for the
Cygwin list to support any and all sites out there with information about Cygwin
packages so if you're having a problem with configuration steps outlined from
someone else's site, your best bet for help related to that information is to
contact them about it.

Your syntax is wrong. Use just 'je28004' if you want that user's domain
information
in your '/etc/passwd' file.

There is a "Users Guide" providing documentation for allot of Cygwin basics you
may find helpful: <http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/> or
<http://cygwin.com/1.7/cygwin-ug-net/cygwin-ug-net.html>, depending on which
version
of Cygwin you're trying.

Larry (or anyone),
  OK, I uninstalled everything.
I can't seem to find any docs that describe how to install sftp on http://cygwin.com/1.7/cygwin-ug-net/cygwin-ug-net.html
  I am still searching though.
What packages do I need for public-key authenticated sftp on an internal network (this won't be going over the internet, but will be going over tcp/ip on our internal network)?

RIght, that's too specific for the Users Guide. Package-specific documentation
is in /usr/share/doc/<package> and Cygwin package-specific stuff is in
/usr/share/doc/Cygwin/<package>. 'sftp', however, is part of the 'openssh'
package in Cygwin.

'ssh-user-config' will create public key files for you.

If you are trying to access network drives with this, please read the
following for
limitations and options:

<http://cygwin.com/1.7/faq/faq.using.html#faq.using.shares>
<http://cygwin.com/1.7/cygwin-ug-net/ntsec.html#ntsec-setuid-overview>

If you're using 'sftp' with users that aren't part of the Administrators group,
please see this thread for possible issues and workarounds:

<http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2009-07/msg00689.html>

Hope that helps.

Larry,
OK, I installed the defaults, except for the following:
  I added zip and unzip
I picked the "Install" option for the entire admin group of packages
  I added openssh
I agreed to dependencies (and befoer that it selected more than one package when I clicked on most of these)
The environment variable is set to:
CYGWIN='ntsec tty'
I logged on to run the ssh-host-config and the first thing I see is this:
Your group name is currently "mkgroup_l_d". This indicates that not
all domain users and groups are listed in the /etc/passwd and
/etc/group files.
See the man pages for mkpasswd and mkgroup then, for example, run
mkpasswd -l -d > /etc/passwd
mkgroup -l -d > /etc/group

This message is only displayed once (unless you recreate /etc/group)
and can be safely ignored.

  This seemed to work:
$ mkpasswd -l > /etc/passwd

  This did not:
$ mkgroup  -l -d > /etc/group
bash: /etc/group: Permission denied
I am logged on as local admin, but I am not sure what account the bash shell is using.

  Two questions:
1) Should I run the ssh-host-config now or wait until the mkgroup issue is resolved?
2) Do I need to resolve the mkgroup issue, and if so, how?
Again, thank you so much for your help!
Dave M

Since you plan to use a local user for ssh/sftp, you can skip the mkgroup
issue for now.

I'd like to see your 'cygcheck -srv' output and what 'ls -l /etc/group
/etc/passwd' says.
*Attach* the former to your reply when you're ready to look at this issue.

Sorry about slapping it in the body, my Yahoo mail is having issues with txt attachments. I tried the file from cygwin, the file from notepad and converting it with Word 2007, no dice. I think its the Yahoo server, but I am nost sure.

Dave,

<http://cygwin.com/acronyms/#PCYMTNQREAIYR>. Please. It's really not polite
to include
the email address of others in the body of your reply. It just opens them
up to more
spam.

Actually, I asked that you *attach* it, not in-line it. This is the same
request that
<http://cygwin.com/problems.html> makes and for good reason. Now people
searching
the email archives for 'openssh' or 'HOME' are going to find your message.
That's
unlikely to be the thing they are looking for.

So, a few comments based on your cygcheck output:

   1. Can you get direct access to this machine or is everything through TS?
   2. Any user on this machine will be better off with the Cygwin home directory
that comes from '/etc/passwd'. Check that '/etc/passwd' has a
"/home/<user>"
home directory, most preferably with <user> not containing any spaces,
for the
user you'll be logging into ssh/sftp as.
   3. If you plan to install and use Cygwin 1.5 (the current release), you
should
reference the documentation for that at cygwin.com. References I sent you
previously were for the upcoming 1.7 release.

So it looks like you didn't remove your previous Cygwin installation...

Larry,
OK, I checked my web mail and I don't see that option.
I am not sure which e-mail addresses are a problem. One looks like an invalid address (yours) and the other is the list address.
Either way, I'll delete them manually from now on. It wasn't my intention to make anyone's life harder. I am new to this list, so I am not sure what I should or shouldn't be doing.
I really am sorry, I originally thought that maybe there was an e-mail address in your sig. I double-checked THAt before replying. I feel like an idiot. I always thought I wasn't, but here I am...
I have completely removed cygwin again and rebooted this server. I am just about to re-install, any suggestions on packages that I need besides openssh?

Yeah, that's a common oversight for web email clients...

In general, any headers from the previous email don't need to be included and
are generally discouraged. That eliminates allot. Some email clients, like
Thunderbird, which I use, adds an intro (see above) with a reference to your
previous posting. Some of them will add email addresses here too. That's
usually the one that slips through the most. As a note, removing the address
(i.e. @foo.bar) is all that's required. The name or id is fine to leave.

You're correct that my email address is not pointing to me. It's there to
prod anyone replying to reply to the list. So, fortunately, I won't be seeing
more spam as a result. The list's address is valid, as you know, though.
So it's good manners to remove this as well as any individual's.

Actually, we draw the line there. If there's an email address in the sig,
then we assume that the poster doesn't care that the address may be
harvested. In that case, it's also not too important to pull the same address
out of other spots in the reply. ;-)

> I feel like an idiot. I always thought I wasn't, but here I am...

It happens. Don't worry about it. If it makes you feel better, you're not
the first one to not recognize this.

If 'openssh' is what you want, that's all you need to install (plus whatever
installs by default).

Larry,
Before I ran setup, I exited from all Cygwin docs, apps, etc. I deleted everything, files, folders, users, registry entries, anything I could think of. I rebooted the server.
I ran setup and the only thing I enabled was openssh.
This is the results I got when I logged onto hte bash shell for the first time:
Your group name is currently "mkgroup_l_d". This indicates that not
all domain users and groups are listed in the /etc/passwd and
/etc/group files.
See the man pages for mkpasswd and mkgroup then, for example, run
mkpasswd -l -d > /etc/passwd
mkgroup -l -d > /etc/group

This message is only displayed once (unless you recreate /etc/group)
and can be safely ignored.

Um, is it because the ntsec environment variable is already set?

Try doing as it asks and try again. If it complains again, I need
to see the results of 'ls -l /etc/passwd /etc/group' and the contents
of these files. If the files are bigger than a few K, let me know
and we'll arrange a way to get them to me off-list. Otherwise,
please *attach* the files (rather than append).

Dave,

If you want to consider, maybe it would be better to try with the
newer Cygwin version, 1.7.

There was some changes/improvements related to environments and
installations done by Domain users (instead of local ones) and also
related to the use of public key authentications. And those are really
needed in Win 2003 environments.
The documentation links that Larry sent are already for the 1.7 version.

If you will give a try, please remember to completly remove the
current Cygwin installation.
Then give us feedback if it behaved better.

Do you have a local administrator you could log in as instead of your domain
user? My guess is that your domain user is at least part of all these
permission
problems. If you don't have a local domain user, perhaps it makes sense to
get your user and group represented in the '/etc/passwd' and '/etc/group' files
instead. Alternatively, you may find a 1.7 install smooths over some of these
difficulties as well, as Julio mentioned.

Larry,
OK, so I removed everything, cleaned up the registry, emptied the recycle bin and rebooted. then I logged in with a local use that had local admin right and reionstalled.

/var/empty, which you mentioned, already has the right permissions, as

Larry,
I installed the beeta version (scarey), and I can ssh into localhost.

Um, the question is, is there a way to test sftp, and is there a guide for configuring public key authentication for sftp?
I am going to try and figure out what files are relevant to my need and read them, but if you could point my in the right direction, I would be greatly appreciative.

Good! That's a step forward at least.

Beta isn't as scary as you might think. It's pretty close to what will be
released (soonish).

You need to run 'ssh-user-config' for the user you plan to ssh/sftp in as.
This will create the keys you need. You should then be able to ssh
into localhost using pubkey. To do this from other machines requires
your public key in the remote machines ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Then
you should be able to pubkey ssh into your host from the remote
machine. After that, you can try sftp. Those are the high-level steps.

Mark,
Well, the good news is, I got ssh-host-config to work!
The bad news is, I don't know what to do next. I am looking at readme files and what not, but if you know where the instructions are on how to setup public key authentication on an sftp server, please feel free to point me in the right direction. The server that will be sending its backup data to the sftp server wants the following info (in a web form):
Server Name:
Server Port:
Server Path:
User Name:
Key:
Key Password:
(optional)
Do I have to be logged in as the Username I generate the key for and then run the shell and type ssh-user-config or?
Key is a text box, I assume after I figure out which key file it is using, I willopen it and copy the contents into this web form, no?
Thanks for all your help guys, I feel like I am really close.
Dave M
