FWIW, I just installed 1.1.0 on my laptop (NT4,SP5) last night, and am
experiencing the same problem.
The delays that I experience don't seem to be as long what Ulrich reports,
though (more on the order of 10 to 15 seconds in my case.)
strace seems to indicate that the time is being spent in lookup_name
(invoked on my NT logon name.)
Another clue: if I've previously established contact with a domain
controller via dial-up networking, but am not currently connected, within
the call to lookup_name (according to strace) dial-up networking will pop up
a dialog asking me if I want to establish a dial-up connection. The top of
this dialog states that the reason for wanting to establish a dial-up
connection is that the system could not contact the domain controller that I
was connected to earlier.

I'm going to guess that the indicated items are your NT Domain
Name, Logon Server Name, and Logon UserName
These lines appear to try to contact your PDC or BDC to try and
detemine your logon account profile information. Such as your SID.
Without this
you may not get proper file permissions set AFAIK. Corinna knows
more about
this than I.
I believe that since Windows caches account information and uses it
when the
domain controller can't be contacted, it might well behoove Cygwin
to cache
the same information on a successful connect, and give up on the
connection after the first failed try, using instead the cached
info.
Unfortunately, AFAICS there is nothing to be done about the first
long delay
because even WinNT takes a longer time booting without a domain
controller to
contact. Unless something is present in the registry to indicate
caches
account status, Cygwin has to try and see for itself if the host is
there.

lookup_name does nothing magically. It calls LookupAccountName().
If a login server is given, it tries to call it with that login
server first. If that call failes, LookupAccountName() is called
again with login server set to NULL which is equivalent to the
local system.
So, if the system hangs that way, it is related to the OS.
I wonder what there can be changed. On one hand there will
be probably no hanging if LookupAccountName() is called only
with NULL server but on the other hand that will disallow
correct security handling of domain users.
Maybe we should use the not NULL login server parameter
only if ntsec is ON...

That code wasn't part of b20.1

As a follow-up to the previous e-mail from me, I did some more
experiments now and found something that might be quite important
to know:
Two situations must be distinguished:
a) The network cable is attached when I log-in into Windows
NT, I register for the domain DEIHF, and the environment
variable LOGONSERVER gets assigned a value IHFSRV or IHFBDC
(we have two Windows NT servers, and depending on the load
an automatic algorithm decides which one to use)
b) When I already remove the network cable while logging in
(but I still register for the domain DEIHF), I get a windows
NT message that "no domain server is available, a local copy
of the environment will be used instead", and the environment
variable LOGONSERVER is set to UJ-NTBK (this is my local
machine).
For the situation a), when executing a CYGNUS command without
network cable attached, the delay seems to be 75 to 80 sec now,
for the situation b) it is only about 15 sec.
When running the command "strace d:\cygnus\cygwin-1.1.0\bin\pwd"
for situation a) it hangs completely (last night I waited 10 min,
this morning now more than 6 min), for the situation b) the delay
is also only 15 sec, and pwd completes.
For the situation b) the last lines of the output file from strace
before it hangs are (for a full file for situation a) see previous
e-mail, file out.2):
485 33914 [sig] pwd 1000 wait_sig: sigcatch_nonmain 0xA4
202 34116 [main] pwd 1000 sig_send: pid 1000, signal -2, its_me 1

Sorry about providing only this last part of the file, attached
are two files that result from the execution of:
strace -oout.{1|2} d:\cygnus\cygwin-1.1.0\bin\pwd.exe
in a DOS window:
out.1: network cable was attached (file is complete, pwd runs without
any significant delay)
out.2: network cable removed (what is a bit strange now is that
as opposed to the test yesterday, where I waited for 10 min,
this command does indeed complete, and after about 15 sec,
I do get the output of "pwd")
Also if I now start e.g. a "bash" shell, the delay I observe this
morning when the network cable is not attached, is only about 15 sec
as well, and no longer 40 to 80 sec as it used to be since installing
CYGWIN-1.1.0. The only change I have done is that I installed yester-
day the latest CYGWIN snapshot, but did not reboot immediately, I
rebooted Windows NT only this morning (I also don't think that I
have to reboot if I exchange e.g. cygwin1.dll, the output of "uname -a"
always indicated that I was using the correct version). I might be
able to live with a 15 sec delay, this is not as bad as 40 to 80 sec.
Cheers,
Ulrich

It may help Corinna figure out what's happening. I was hoping that you
would actually use the command that I indicated and might provide the
output of the "somefile" which would provide a lot more context than the
above.

I think I'm going to have to invent an email filter that weeds out the phrases
like this:
"(works|operates|runs).*(fine|swell|great|with no problem|perfectly).*\
(on|under|using) *(Linux|UNIX|HPUX|(Cygwin|gnu-win32) B[12][0-9](.[0-9])?)"
I think it will probably cut down on email traffic to this mailing list by
10 - 20%.

OK, I have never used this command before, and was therefore not aware
of the correct syntax.
I did now in a DOS window (network cable attached).
cd \cygnus\cygwin-1.1.0\bin
.\strace .\pwd
No problem, the command runs without any visible delay and terminates
correctly. Now I remove the network cable, and run ".\strace .\pwd" again.
The execution seems to hang completely (not only 40 to 80 sec delay, I
have been waiting for more than 10 minutes now), the last lines on the
screen are
3119 1019256 [main] pwd 1000 sig_send: returning 0 from sending signal -2
12037 1031293 [main] pwd 1000 internal_getlogin: Domain: DEIHF

3083 1040634 [main] pwd 1000 lookup_name: name : Jakobus
Does this information help? Even if after 10 minutes I attach the network
cable again, the process remains hanging.
I should perhaps mention that I work on a notebook computer which has a
nice suspend function to save the main memory to disk and resume operation
without rebooting. For this reason, I almost never boot, and when I work
at home (without network connection), I simply switch on the notebook computer
again and continue from where I stopped. I have absolutely no problems
with other programs (of course when my e-mail program wants to make a POP
connection it complains about being unable to connect, or if I want to print
to a network printer), everything else runs fine, also the old CYGWIN-B20.1
did run without any trouble this way.

Sorry. I should have said "strace -osomefile c:\cygwin\bin\pwd" where
c:\cygwin\bin == whereever is appropriate for your setup.

TMPDIR is not set, but setting it to a local directory does not
make any difference concerning the delays.

Unfortunately, this does not work. In can execute "/bin/pwd", but
trying to run "strace /bin/pwd" results in the message
strace: error creating process /bin/pwd, (error 3)
(I have installed just 1 hour ago the latest available snapshot,
and "strace" has been replaced from there: 37376 Apr 22 04:26 /bin/strace)
However, I also went back to the clean CYGWIN-1.1.0 installation,
strace report the same error message.
Let me also reply to the message from DJ Delorie here:
> The only thing I see that's odd is this line:
>
> PWD = `//e/zip'
>
> Especially since everything else uses /cygdrive/e/
This happened accidentially and is not the default. If I open a bash
shell (with or without network cable attached), the contents of PWD
is e.g. "PWD=/cygdrive/d/cygnus/CYGWIN~1.0/bin". In this particular
case when I executed the command "cygcheck -r -s -v > cygcheck.out"
I changed before the directory by typing "cd //e/zip". Perhaps I
should have written "cd /cygdrive/e/zip", but this is not related
to the delay problems I have.

This would happen if `cd //e/zip' were executed. This would cause the problem
of the delay.

Just one bizarre thing I've seen in your cygcheck output:
PWD=//e/zip
Could it be that for some reason, cygwin1.dll when initializing try to
access this path as current directory, then timeout on accessing machine
'E', interpreting //e/zip as share zip on machine E?...

I thought that we'd fixed that problem long ago. I wonder if it crept back
into the "newest" version of bash.

Interesting. Would that be because HOME gets set to / and then the value of
HOME gets prepended to /.bashrc so that you end up with //.bashrc?

The TMPDIR variable is also translated by cygwin1.dll v1.1.0. Is it
possible that this is a network path?
Also, if you run "strace -osomefile /bin/pwd" it will probably be
obvious what is causing the delay. There will be a really large
number in the first field of somefile.

Actually, we add the "!" in front of the environment variables. Microsoft
uses a "=" for these variables and we translate that to "!" since "="
is an invalid character for environment variable names in UNIX land.

HOME is set to "e:\jakobus", which is a local directory on my hard-

What is HOME set to? Or better, run "cygcheck -r -s -v" and send us
the output.

No, this is something that Windows does in order to preserve the
dos-ism of each drive having a "current directory", when there are
multiple "dos" machines running. It's documented in MSDN.

I do not have a $HOME/.bashrc or $HOME/.bash_profile at the moment.
It seems to me that with the "!D:" etc. variables mentioned above,
CYGNUS keeps track of the last visited directories on the various
partitions. For instance, now I rebooted and have not accessed
any file on the floppy disk or any file over the network since
rebooting. If I now start a bash session, I only get the following
defined:
!C:='C:\WINNT\Profiles\jakobus.000\Desktop\Programme'
!D:='d:\corel\VERSIONS'
In particular, there is no reference to a network directory, but
still if I remove the network cable and type any CYGNUS command
from a DOS window, I observe a 40 to 80 sec delay.

Well, I agree, but not that much longer. This should be fractions of
seconds, and it should not make a difference whether my network cable
is attached or not.

I have tried this now as well (snapshot cygwin-inst-20000421.tar.gz,
version CYGWIN_NT-4.0 1.1.1(0.19/3/2) 2000-04-22 00:15:04 i686 unknown),
same effect.
As a cross test, I went again back to my CYGWIN installation
21.0(0.0/1/1) 1999-1-16 00:09:20, which I still had archived in
a zip file. There I do not observe the delays when the network
cable is not attached.
Cheers,
Ulrich

Yes, it could be the reason

This is certainly strange. What's contained in the ~/.bashrc file.

Ah, we're getting closer to the problem. I expect that Cygwin commands running
from the DOS prompt to be slightly longer overall. Every instance of the
command has to load and initialize Cygwin. There is a means to add the
Cygwin1.dll to the list of "Known DLL's" that get loaded on startup of the
environment and that might speed up the commands for you. I don't remember the
particulars of how to do this but it is in one of the cygwin archives I don't
remember if it was discussed in cygwin or cygwin-developers.
You could also try one of the newer snapshots to see if that solves the
problem.

These should have no affect.

Unfortunately, this is not the problem. There are only directories on
my local hard disk in $PATH. However, the output of "set" also includes
variables
!0:=0:/home4/jakobus/LAPACK_3.0/BLAS/SRC/
!A:='A:\'
!D:='D:\cygnus\cygwin-1.1.0\lib\gcc-lib\i686-pc-cygwin\2.95.2'
!E:='E:\zip'
!\:='\\Ihfbdc\Netzsoftware\FEKO_update'
and indeed the "!\:" refers to a network directory. Can this be the
reason? However, this is set only inside bash, not before in my
DOS shell, from where I start bash (I do observe the long delays
only when executing CYGNUS commands from within a DOS window, not
when running them from within BASH).
I also tried to remove other environment variables that might
indicate a network connection, such as LOGONSERVER and USERDOMAIN,
but also no effect with this.

Sounds like you've the network paths in your environment PATH. AFAIR, this has
always been a problem. Try removing the networked paths from PATH before/after
starting bash.
Earnie.

Hello,
last week I upgraded from CYGWIN B21 to the new net release
CYGWIN 1.1.0. I have absolutely no trouble when my computer
is connected to the network (Ethernet). However, this is a
notebook computer running under Windows NT 4.0 service pack 6,
and whenever I work at home I do not have a permanent network
connection.
The following effect is fully reproducable:
If I disconnect my network cable and want to execute any
CYGWIN command (e.g. open a bash shell, type "ls" in a DOS
window, execute "make" from within emacs etc.), I have to
wait for about 40 to 80 seconds, then I get the correct result
(e.g. if I type "ls" only after 40 to 80 sec I get the list
of files, no error or so is printed). As soon as I attach the
network cable again, I get an immediate response. I also
can open a bash shell (also delay 40 to 80 sec), but then
inside this bash shell I can execute CYGWIN commands and
get an immediate response. The same problem applies to
applications that I compile with gcc.
Does anybody else observe this problem? Any idea how to fix it?
I did not have this or similar problems with CYGWIN B21.
Thanks,
Ulrich
