Hello devzero,

Monday, February 04, 2002, 12:47:54 AM, you wrote:

Note that if you enable the memory debugger you'll get strange
problems when using the MC editor. This is because the pointere
returned by MAD is not the same as the one returned from the cygwin
malloc function ... When you free the memory you will get a segfault.

This seems to be a bug in MC MAD not cygwin at all.

I must admit that I'm getting a bit confused between the FreeBSD
terminology and that of Redhat's. In FBSD, a package is a pre-compiled
program together with any support/config files; while theirs "ports"
system, are "packages" of source code and other files necessary to
compile an application into its binaries. Soooo, are RPMs like the former
or latter? I ask because you speak of "dependencies" above, which makes
me suspect that RPMs may be what I'm used to calling "ports". Tia...

It is a package management system used on many Linux distributions. It
keeps a database of installed packages and files that belong to them, so
you can always know which files belong to which packages, what packages
are installed and so on. It also knows about dependencies between
packages.

There is a CygWin port of RPM and links to some packages (including MC)
in RPM format avaulable at this address:

You can find a precompiled Midnight Commander version 4.1.36 for CygWin at
http://cygwin-rpm.sourceforge.net/

Oh and if someone knows how to make it display proper pseudographic
characters, please don't be silent.

none of them working. changing download links did not help much either. I
have found MC on tucows site but the transfer rate was so slooooooooooow
that I had to given up :))

I'd say that it might be tar.gz.bzip.zip and so on files might be associated
with that editor and that's why it happens. I have to check, as soon as I
will be able to work with MC

>
> Anyway here the patch. Can you please comment back if entering archives
works for you.

I will, no problem :) but can you explain to me what I should do with that
.diff file? Sorry, but I am just a lame lawyer ... and how to compile the MC
files when I'll have them ungzipped and untared .... thats stresses me
:) and I completely don't have any idea how to compile apps.

maybe what I want to ask will sound stupid but why there are no those fancy
installers used to install MC, Pine and other applications? I found Xemacs
for win and gimp have such easy-to-use installers and now I have to compile
files... if I only knew how and what does it exactly means ;) gnu world is
full of surprises, traps and fun .
