For what it's worth, I also ran into the problem with the Cygwin setup
updater hanging during the man-db update.

I'm on Win8.1, using Cygwin 64-bit.

I didn't have GDB installed, so checked with Process Explorer, the mandb.exe
process was using CPU, but I didn't notice a particular file handle open.

The /var/log/setup.log.run.XXXX is at http://pastebin.com/pZyc2iWf

I've installed GDB, if there's any particular steps I can take to attach to
mandb and provide better information (stack traces / variable contents)
please let me know.

I tried this, but it didn't work for me... :(

The script /et/postinstall/man-db.sh still doesn't acquire the "done" 
label..

I had a Cygwin install/update hang on man-db install, waiting on this
command. I had to kill the install. On the subsequent install, I
selected Reinstall, and it installed smoothly.

Sounds like there is a little bit of ironing out needed for the new
package.

It takes a while, but it shouldn't take that long. Could you attach a 
cygcheck -s -v -r > cygcheck.out as described here 
(https://cygwin.com/problems.html) please?

My guess at this point is that you have a package installed that for 
whatever reason is confusing mandb.

I apologize for the difficulties. Building the database does quite a 
bit, but that part of mandb is generally pretty stable.

strace doesn't appear to like mandb -c either, or I'd suggest that.

The install worked OK (but took some time) on 32bit.  On 64bit I get these

Based on the characteristics of the crash I'd say that there is a race
somewhere and the debug output serializes things enough for this not to
become a problem.  It didn't even appreciably slow down the creation of
the database from what I could tell.  NB: I was testing on a quad-core
w/ SSD, but the mandatory virus scanner inserts itself on each file
operation of course.
