Cygwin=E2=80=99s =E2=80=9Cbase=E2=80=9D doesn=E2=80=99t use the same philos=
ophy as the Linux distros you list.  It=E2=80=99s closer to the base instal=
l of the major BSDs, or an old-line Unix.  That is, you get just enough stu=
ff to help you bootstrap whatever you actually need to get work done.
