Gee! That's tough.
How did you download them? How did you install them?
How did you try to run it?
What is "it"?

This is because (most) folk don't select packages based on size, but
rather on content - what the package is/does.

How do you plan to avoid it? If you want apache, you have to download
it. The real issue to me is that the downloads are not resumable, so you
can't easily take several bites at a single large file.

this is not essentially a bug as such, but an interface issue that i feel is
pretty important. when selecting which packages in the setup program you
wish to download/install, there is no reference made to how large the
packages are in terms of file size. this makes it a big inconvenience to
those like myself on modem connections where d/l'ing some packages could
take a few hours. in fact, even when downloading commences there is a mere
progress bar indicating how far through the total size of the packages is
complete, rather than the total download size or even the total download
time remaining. this would be really really useful if it could be
implemented, thanks :)

Please keep replies to the list- and you don't need to cc me, I read the
list regularly and take special note of threads that I respond to. I
usually cc people when I am not sure if they are list members- if you
are a list member, just let me know and I won't cc you on replies in
this or any other thread. Also I don't know everything about cygwin- so
the messages that you send to me alone are missing out on a great
resource of people on the list who would like to help you if you gave
them the chance.
> What I tried to run was cygwin.exe
Last I checked there was no such thing as cygwin.exe. Maybe that has
changed lately. Are you sure it was cygwin.exe and not cygwin.bat?
> but it did not put them anywhere.
Are you using the program setup.exe that you downloaded from cygwin.com?
If not, you are on your own. This mailing list only supports standard
installations, no one has the time to help out every odd flavor of
customized installations (which are usually doomed to fail, unless the
person installing knows a whole lot about cygwin).
Setup.exe will unpack all the files to the correct locations, and when
it has completed, cygwin will be ready to use. I would suggest deleting
whatever you "installed" already, downloading setup.exe again, and
trying to "Install from Local Directory". If that doesn't work, try
running setup.exe again and downloading all the packages again (maybe
from another mirror).
I have to add- your "i dont have time to let anyone help me" replies and
messages are not helping the list members, let alone yourself. Please
take the time to write full sentences, with capitalization and
punctuation, and answer some of the questions that we have. Believe me-
Cygwin is a great product, and the people on this list (myself included)
*want* to help you start using it, but you are making it *exceedingly*
difficult for us to even guess what the problem may be.

Your mouse has moved.
Windows NT must be restarted for the change to take effect.
Reboot now? [OK]

Please provide more information. Tell us all the selections you made
when you ran setup.exe, e.g. install for all, or "just me" etc (as many
as you can remember). Send this to the list.
>when I try to run it
When you try to run what?
Please provide more info and more detail. How do you expect anyone to be
able to help you when we don't know anything about the problem?
Thanks,
Peter

At the risk of increasing confusion:

All of "which" programs? There are at least 80 utilities, and each of them can be considered "programs".

Again, we need specifics.
Now when I try to run

Still haven't said anything about what "it" is.

There are at least 10 ways I can think of offhand where cygwin1.dll is not found.
Again, we need specifics, not generics. Have you even read the installation documentation provided for Cygwin?
(I hear skeletons rattling in the closet...something about reading docs, etc...;-))
>Help
Can't help if you won't tell us exactly what you did. Step by step. And, as someone else has said, use proper
English or American grammar.
