pdfroff (or groff) broken?

pdfroff (or groff) broken?

I'm getting this whenever I try to convert any document:

Well, gee, thanks for SFA.

FWIW it works fine for me now I have reverted to a previous installation.
Sucks to be anyone else who might encounter this problem in the future 

though, huh?
