Hi,
a friend of mine has copied setup and every pachage on a CD, but I find a
prolem during the installation. The list of avalaible package are empty and
there is a message"nothing to install/update". My os is win 98. What can I
do? Excuse me for my very bad english and thank you for your precious help.

We can't see what's on the CD, and you don't tell us how you are
trying to install it, so it's difficult to diagnose your problem.
Perhaps your friend did not copy setup.ini properly.

My advice is to have your friend exactly mirror one of the Cygwin
mirrors, including setup.exe, setup.ini and the "release" directory,
preserving the directory structure. Burn that on a CD. When running
setup.exe, choose "install from internet" and give a custom URL of the
form //HOST/CD where "\\HOST\CD" is the share name of your CD-ROM
drive (which you'll have to assign if you haven't already).

There may be other ways of doing this, especially with the latest
setup, but this approach worked for me a few weeks ago.

Regards,
David

I have his setup.exe, the same directory structure (CYG, CYG/contrib,
CYG/Latest) his setup.ini in cyg directory. In setup.ini I read the
following:

# This file is automatically generated. If you edit it, your
# edits will be discarded next time the file is generated.
# See http://cygwin.com/setup.html for details.

CVS is very helpful for managing releases and controlling
the concurrent editing of source files among multiple
authors. Instead of providing version control for a
collection of files in a single directory, CVS provides
version control for a hierarchical collection of
directories consisting of revision controlled files.

These directories and files can then be combined together
to form a software release."

Burn that on a CD. When running

I can't do it. I don't know what I have to fill in the connection dialog.

I've also downloaded the latest version of setup.exe...but it's not work.

I've followed your suggestion (my prblem was the internet connection...)
and I've choosen the "Install from Internet" option...adding "E:/CYG" as
an host. In this case the list of package is FULL and not empty(like
before), but when start the installation there is another error: "Can't
open E:/CYG/latest/*.* no such file or directory"...for EVERY package in
/latest and /contrib...I hope this is usefull to undestand the problem.
Thank you very much.

The fact that you have the contrib and latest directories implies
on or both of the following two things to me:

(1) Your temporary contained data from previous install attempts.
(2) You do not really have the newest installer.

The reason I say this is that the new family of installers does
not create the directories you mention. If I go in the temporary
directory I use right now, I have one folder, which has a long
and somewhat obscure name that reflects the mirror it came from.
If I go inside that directory, there is the setup.ini file and
the directory called release only.

My advise to you is this.
(1) Clean out a directory that you use for Cygwin install and
nothing else. I call mine cygtemp on all my machines.
(2) Get the latest installer from Cygwin. On my work machine,
to insure I am not getting an older version, I have to hit refresh
a couple of times on the Cygwin page, due to some nimrod between
me at the Cygwin page caching stuff. Make sure that your setup.exe
goes in your cygtemp directory. Note: that should be the ONLY thing
there right now.
(3) When you run "install from the internet", make sure that the
local directory it is using is the cygtemp directory.

Some side notes:
I always use "IE5 Options" for my connect. When I started, "direct
connection" did not work, IE5 always has, so it has become ritual
for me. I also install my cygwin with Unix and All options. I
also, under the category of ritual, almost always use the progeny
mirror.

Hope this helps,
Wayne Keen
