I just downloaded the LessTif 0.89.9 and tryed untarring it and got the
following errors

Based off how the tar file is layed out I untarred it from /
if that is the case how can it link to ../Lesstif from the root directory?
using tar xfvz
did I use the wrong tar command?

Maybe you had an older version of LessTif in that directory
and files were marked read-only?

been using for other installs including X11.
I tried running the command as a non administrator and get even worse
problems.
Just to try it I deleted the files where it said no permission and
everything worked, strange. Its almost as if those files were already
sitting around but the permissions weren't right.
