Hi All,

I posted about this problem in the past but was unable to solve it completely.
It seems getent works intermediately.
Sometimes it shows my user and sometimes it doesn't.
I don't think I have this problem with other users, but maybe I do and don't feel it as much cause they are less used. The user I'm looking for is the one responsible for our automations, so every time getent fails to find it, I see it in my scripts.

Any idea why this is happening?

Adding command outputs:
myUser@dom1-job11 ~
$ getent passwd user1

myUser@dom1-job11 ~
$ getent passwd user1

myUser@dom1-job11 ~

Do me a favor and try,

getent passwd myUser

and see if that works better. Thanks.

It works fine for other users as much as I can tell.
The problem seems to be with one specific user.

Long time ago, I had a problem like that, and I think it was the last line on the passwd file. But, I don't think it's the case with yours.

Is "UK" the name of the local machine or the name of your domain?

How does your /etc/nsswitch.conf file look like?

Do you still have /etc/passwd and /etc/group files? If so, does removing
the files change the above behaviour? If so, can you attach both files
verbatim to your reply?

Thanks,
Corinna

You aren't running Cygwin Cygserver and I don't see your nsswitch setup.

P.S.
Also, please no top-posting in this list.

What is enumerated from SAM/AD by getent is controlled by /etc/nsswitch.conf
entry db_enum which defaults to:

# db_enum: cache builtin

I changed my SAM, non-AD, non-domain system to:

db_enum: cache local builtin

Please read the rest of the info about db_enum in /etc/nsswitch.conf and set up
your system accordingly.

If you are in a domain with AD, it will be worth your while to configure and run
cygserver service, under cygrunsrv, to cache your AD entries.
Even if you are on a SAM, non-AD, non-domain system, if you run a lot of Cygwin
processes, or use cron a lot, it will be worth your while to configure and run
cygserver service, under cygrunsrv, to cache your SAM and process entries.

If you run a lot of processes, it may be worth maximizing some entries in
/etc/cygserver.conf:

# kern.srv.cleanup_threads: No. of cygserver threads used for cleanup tasks.
# Default: 2, Min: 1, Max: 16, command line option -c, --cleanup-threads
#kern.srv.cleanup_threads 2
kern.srv.cleanup_threads 16

# kern.srv.request_threads: No. of cygserver threads used to serve
# application requests.
# Default: 10, Min: 1, Max: 310, command line option -r, --request-threads
#kern.srv.request_threads 10
kern.srv.request_threads 310

# kern.srv.process_cache_size: No. of concurrent processes which can be handled
# by Cygserver concurrently.
# Default: 62, Min: 1, Max: 310, command line option -p, --process-cache
#kern.srv.process_cache_size 62
kern.srv.process_cache_size 310

P.S.
Also, please no top-posting in this list.

------------

Hi, Andrey!

Sorry for top posting, my bad :)
I have the default nsswitch - This is my configuration:
# /etc/nsswitch.conf
#
# This file is read once by the first process in a Cygwin process tree.
# To pick up changes, restart all Cygwin processes. For a description
# see https://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/ntsec.html#ntsec-mapping-nsswitch
#
# Defaults:
# passwd: files db
# group: files db
# db_enum: cache builtin
# db_home: /home/%U
# db_shell: /bin/bash
# db_gecos: <empty>

Why do I need cygserver? I don't have it on any other server and everything works fine.
I actually have this problem only in one env - the rest works as expected.
All servers are installed the same, but for some reason this problem persists only in one env / domain, and one server specifically has this problem more than others (even after reinstallation).

Thanks
====================================================================

Long time ago, I had a problem like that, and I think it was the last line on the passwd file. But, I don't think it's the case with yours.

---------------

Hi Jose,

Thank you for your reply, but you are correct, this is not my problem cause I'm not using passwd file after being advised not to.

Thanks

Is "UK" the name of the local machine or the name of your domain?

How does your /etc/nsswitch.conf file look like?

Do you still have /etc/passwd and /etc/group files? If so, does removing the files change the above behaviour? If so, can you attach both files verbatim to your reply?

Thanks,
Corinna

Hi,

UK is my domain.
I'm not using passwd and group files after being advised in the past not to.
My /etc/nsswitch.conf is default. Didn't make any changes to this file.

Since I can't reproduce this problem, would you mind trying to run
getent under strace? It would be helpful to get 2 strace outputs
for the same account, one working, one failing. Call it like this:

  $ strace -o getent-1.trace getent passwd <account>

Thanks,

Is there any difference in internet connectivity between between the problem
system and the other systems?
Try
	$ whois uk.

to see that UK is the ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domain) of the United Kingdom.
It is also in every app, or on every system, where aspects of DNS usage have to
be managed, in the PSL (Public Suffix List - see https://publicsuffix.org/),
which lists all ccTLDs, gTLDs (Global Top Level Domain), 2LDs, and higher level
DNS suffixes under which domain names appear and may be created or registered,
and under those domain names below the higher level DNS suffixes, host names may
appear and be used.
It is available in a Cygwin package; try:

	$ cygcheck -p publicsuffix-list-dafsa

You can view the source under:

	https://github.com/publicsuffix/list

and from:

	https://publicsuffix.org/list/public_suffix_list.dat

With MS having long ago blurred the lines between Windows and DNS domains, it is
likely not a good idea to name a local domain the same as any part of the DNS
name space, especially any names in the PSL, without smart DMZ blocking rules.
It is possible either: that problem system has external internet access and is
looking around the world for users; or unlike your other systems, that problem
system does not, and some lookup is failing or restricted.
You may need to get someone to run and compare network traces on the failing
system and another working system, if a software problem can not be diagnosed.

[There was a similar issue about five years ago with Oracle databases, whose
software was distributed, documented, and set up by default for years using
names like /SERVER/.world, so company database names could look as coolly global
as DNS domain names, although real DNS domain names were also supported later.
Then gTLD (Global Top Level Domain) WORLD was proposed, and we had to ensure
that all Oracle servers were behind blocking DMZs that ensured Oracle databases
did not try to leak to the outside *WORLD*.
Try
	$ whois world.
]
[I was involved in a company split ten years ago where the original company had
embedded the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) into every host and server name
in the company.
The last I heard, the new company still had to use the old company domain name
for systems internally, rather than just the local host or server name.
So *DO NOT* use or embed domain names where you don't need to!
MS insistence on always having to specify domain names rather than always
implying them is a very bad misfeature when a company changes its name.]

Thanks. What happens is that in the non-working scenario the user
name is refused by Cygwin because it's apparently not in the primary
domain of the machine. I.e., if the machine's primary domain is
"dom0", and "user1" is in "dom1", then the account has to be called
"dom1+user1". The name only is forbidden in this case.

However, this doesn't explain why this happens at all since apparently
"user1" is in the primary domain of the machine, and why it only fails
intermittendly. In both cases, working and non-working, the domain is
returned by the same Windows call LookupAccountNameW.

What's really strange is that in the working case a lot of network
related Windows DLLs are loaded into the process, e.g. wshqos.dll,
WSHTCPIP.DLL, wship6.dll etc., while this does not happen in the
non-working case. None of these DLLs is requested by Cygwin, so this is
something occuring in the native Windows background. This is a bit
suspicious and may point to some interaction with a virus scanner or
something along these lines, and which for some reason doesn't always
work as desired (Avast, anybody?) Can you check this, perhaps?

Apart from that first question is, is the domain really called "dom"
and is the user account name really "user1"? I'm asking because
the name may collide with another account name from a builtin or
second domain, and sometimes the wrong user account is returned by the
Windows functions for whatever reason.

Second question is, can I send you the URL to a Cygwin test DLL with
extended debug info in private email? In this case I'd only need
the non-working trace, preferredly verbatim, and you can return the
trace by private email as well.

Thanks,
Corinna

After reading your email I started to suspect having a domain issue.
I removed the server from the domain, deleted all its relevant records and rejoined it.
It seems the problem was solved for now.
I already tried in the past removing it from the domain, and even reinstalled the server, but it didn't help, I think deleting all corresponding records after removing from domain did the trick.

I will update if this issue re-occurs.

I really appreciate the help!

Thanks!

That should be sufficient for most use cases.

> Why do I need cygserver?

You don't exactly NEED cygserver. But if you have
1. Domain (or even multi-domain) environment.
2. and/or remote/slow/flaky connection to the domain server.
cygserver may provide a smoother experience as it caches some information
related to names resolution.

Running cygserver will also cache info and speed up processing if you run many:

- service daemons under Cygwin, especially cron jobs or ssh sessions
- concurrent processes, especially deeply nested, forked, or background
(some cron jobs background subprocesses *heavily* to reduce run time)
- XSI IPC message queues
- semaphores
- shared memory segments

otherwise that has to be managed by either the process itself or the root parent
process, possibly in parallel threads.

Hello again,

Unfortunately the problem returned :(
For the same server and now an additional one.
This time removing from the domain and deleting the entries did not do the trick, maybe if I delete from all DC servers instead waiting for replication it might help, but since the issue started again this is not a final solution anyway.

There is AV software installed on any of these servers.

Feel free to send me the additional info you mentioned.

Thanks a lot for the help!
Much appreciated!

Hi,
Well it might help, but since I don't have this installed in any other envs and everything is working fine I prefer to try as a last resort.
If I won't be able to find the root cause I'll try this as well.

Thanks!

Update:
- I tried installing cygserver as a service but problem persists.
- Also tried verifying the user in the domain with net user. While getent fails to find my user, net user finds it with no issues.
- Tried installing and configuring krb5-workstation but it didn’t help as well.

Will appreciate any other leads to check...

Thanks

Running cygserver will also cache info and speed up processing if you run many:

- service daemons under Cygwin, especially cron jobs or ssh sessions
- concurrent processes, especially deeply nested, forked, or background
(some cron jobs background subprocesses *heavily* to reduce run time)
- XSI IPC message queues
- semaphores
- shared memory segments

otherwise that has to be managed by either the process itself or the root parent process, possibly in parallel threads.
