* Cygcheck says w3m 0.5.3-1 package incomplete, file type mismatch messages

w3m works, but appears to run slowly after the last update. While
comparing the output of "cygcheck -s -r -v" I noticed some
differences.

Line 24 below shows Incomplete.

I re-ran setup.exe, removed w3m, then re-installed from the same
mirror, no change.

Is this output satisfactory, or is there a corrective action for this
package post-install?

Sorry you're having trouble. Strange, I did benchmarking in
development and found 0.5.3 slightly faster than 0.5.2

I'm not sure what's causing that, I show "OK" on my installations.

Did you have 0.5.2 installed previously?

I can't replicate it currently, I'll look into it further over the
next few days and report back or up-version if I see anything wrong or
fixable.

If anyone else is experiencing w3m-0.5.3-1 trouble, that would be good to know.

I can confirm the issue with the w3m package. I have a local sync job
that keeps a local copy of the repository (nice to install a package
offline when I'm not on) and it is synced up the kernel.org server. I
got the same error on a fresh install and I never had w3m installed
prior. I didn't check speed though.

I just had a look into the tar archive, and I see two weirdnesses
in terms of the directory entries in the archive.

- The permissions of all dirs are 700, but they should be 755, ideally.

- Dir entries in a tar archive usually have a trailing slash. In
  w3m-0.5.3-1.tar.bz2 they don't.

Maybe that's what cygcheck is choking about. Incidentally the
w3m-0.5.2-2.tar.bz2 archive looks "normal".

The slowness mentioned above is the delay before the web page is
displayed, even when looking at a local file. It's noticeably slower
to display than the previous version (I'm running 0.5.3-1 as mentioned
above.) After the page (http or local .html file) loads, w3m is it's
normal self.

I have more info: If I pipe the output of w3m to "less" or redirect
it to a file, w3m runs at its usual blazing speed. Something
associated with redirecting the output speeds things up.

Summarizing: "w3m foo.html" has a second or two delay, but "w3m
foo.html > foo.output"or "w3m foo.html | less" is near-instantaneous.

Thanks, everyone.

Ah, my benchmarks were based on redirecting a large file so that makes sense.

Let me look at this and at least just repackage under a single id &
755 permission to address
what Corinna found (I had to use several Windows boxes during
packaging as I primarily
use Linux now).

Any suggestions welcome.

I just noticed that uninstalling w3m-img reduces w3m's local file load time.

Still working on repackaging to possibly address the other issue.

Hi Bob,

I have some timing data courtesy of Sysinternals Procmon that has the
time from invocation of w3m to display at 6 to 7 seconds, if that
helps any. Package: w3m-0.5.3-2 was installed a few days ago, haven't
noticed any load time changes (the test this morning was on a 28 kb
local HTML file to avoid any network delay factors.

No hurry, if you ever find out the issue (assuming it' reproducable on
your machine) it'd be interesting to know,

The machine I'm using is a Windows 7 64 bit, 3 Ghz, 3+ Gig machine, so
it should be sufficient for the task.

Thanks for your efforts and investigations.

Hi Keith,

Just to confirm, have you uninstalled w3m-img? I'm no expert at
Cygwin/X and I don't use it normally, I compiled in X11 support since
it was a nice addition and it actually worked for 0.5.3 :)

In the past when I had Cygwin/X gvim installed it would take console
vim longer to startup, no idea if it's the same issue.

Anyway, here are my tests on an average, WinXP box with a fresh Cygwin
non-X install (except for w3m-img). I used
http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bashref.html saved locally, I
typed Q as soon as the page loaded, not very scientific...:

1. Uninstalled w3m-img

$ time w3m ./bashref.html

real 0m1.875s
user 0m0.559s
sys 0m0.231s

2. Re-installed w3m-img

real 0m5.016s
user 0m0.887s
sys 0m0.293s

3. Uninstalled w3m-img (just to make sure)

real 0m1.812s
user 0m0.747s
sys 0m0.184s

If it's still a problem for you and others, I'm not sure how to replicate it.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply above.

I have not uninstalled w3m-img at this point, but will do so on
Monday. As far as Cygwin-X goes, it normally isn't running. I run
w3m and all Cygwin utilities in a PuttyCyg terminal screen.

I have the usual quick w3m speeds on a PC at home with an older
version of w3m (0.5.2-2, Feb 2011) where w3m-img is not installed.
I'll uninstall w3m-img from the machine at work on Monday and check
again.

Thanks again for your time and effort in packaging w3m and running these tests.

Bob, I've uninstalled w3m-img from my primary desktop machine (where
w3m page loads were slow) and now w3m is back to its original fast
speed.

Before uninstalling, I took the liberty of renaming
/usr/lib/w3m/w3mimgdisplay.exe to something else, and noticed an
instant speed improvement in w3m after doing so. Based on that, I
uninstalled w3m-img.

Since I normally don't have CygwinX loaded, I wonder if w3mimgdisplay
is waiting to contact X and timing out after a few seconds, accounting
for the slowness?
