Just curious, why isn't ftp://ftp.cygwinports.org/pub/cygwinports on the
standard list of mirrors? It seems like it should be because it has many
more packages.

That's exactly why it isn't in the standard list of mirrors: it contains
packages that aren't part of the Cygwin distribution, and aren't supported by
the Cygwin project.
