Anybody:
No matter which mirror I attempt to download from, I get a "Download
Incomplete" message whenever I attempt to obtain the m4 binaries. (I need it
for another program I'm trying to compile, which complained that it needed
it when I ran autoconf).
Also (minor issue) my bash shell, installed to XP Home Edition, apparently
can't find my user name. Instead of rcalco@CALCOLAP it says "I have no
name!@CALCOLAP". Anybody else have this problem?
BTW when I'm attempting to download m4, I'm downloading from my Win2K box to
my XP harddrive because sucky XP can't seem to figure out how to talk to my
DSL modem. I have successfully installed Cygwin on all my boxes, including
the XP box, and only appear to be having a problem (as far as I can tell)
with the m4 binaries. I was able to get the source, and will probably
compile it anyway, but I thought somebody would like to know that there
appears to be a problem downloading its binaries.
:)

May I suggest looking at the email archives when you have questions about
whether other people have had similar problems to you with Cygwin? This
list is where all problems are reported and discussed so it's real helpful
to the overall volume if folks do a little research first and avoid a
message like this if possible.
In answer to your question, yes, others have seen this problem. I won't
attempt to summarize all the possible issues here but two common ones are:
1. Your /etc/passwd and/or /etc/group files are incorrect. mkpasswd
and mkgroup should help here though you may want to review the email
archives for issues if you're part of a domain.
2. See "My Windows logon name has a space in it, will this cause problems?"

yes, thanx.

Right. It is annoying when new folks rehash all the same questions, a
problem, for instance, no the python list. Sorry - I usually have better
manners.
% In answer to your question,
Thanx, I'm on track I think... I set my $USER and $HOME variables in
/etc/profile, and made sure the directories /home/rcalco exist (they weren't
created during the install). It still says "I have no name!@CALCOLAP" but it
does start me in /home/rcalco anyway. I'll figure it out, or I'll stop
trying since it doesn't inhibit me functionally in any apparent way.
I successfully compiled what I wanted to compile so I feel I achieved my
main objective. Somebody might want to check out wuzzup with m4 binaries not
downloading properly from setup, but I was able to compile it from the
source anyway so it wasn't a show stopper, just a nuissance. :)
Sorry for the hassle.
- Bob.
