What options did you select when running setup?
Why did you run a two-step install?
Please send in the logs from /var/log/setup.log and
/var/log/setup.log.full.

Where are the "Install from Internet" files cached?
I've been using cygwin for year or two and have always picked "Download"
because like Perry I assumed the first option meant 'delete downloaded
files when done'. Does this mean I now have two copies of every
installation archive?

It's www.cygwin.com/download.html
Even now, I see nothing there to suggest that an "install from internet"
would also retain the uninstalled packages. I visualize it downloading
a package, installing it, and then deleting the downloaded file before
downloading the next package, so as to minimize disk requirements.

For as long as I've been aware of it, Install from Internet cached the
package archive files just like Download from Internet. If you can suggest
an improvement in the documentation that would make that clearer for you, a
change would be gratefully received.

There shouldn't be much to do, if any of the packages you have already
downloaded won't install, find and delete the associated the archive file
(e.g., .../release/ash/ash-20020131-1.tar.bz2 for ash) then install or
download from internet again. This file, for example, can be found by
searching for ash* starting from the local files directory. You can tell
which packages have installed by looking in /etc/setup for *.lst.gz .

It hasn't changed in years. Can you point me to the area of
documentation that suggested the incorrect behaviour to you?

Oh sure, just try doing an install from internet.

When I read the instructions a month ago, I got the impression that
'install from internet' would not save the downloaded packages after
installing them. Perhaps the documentation (and/or the behavior of
setup) has changed since then.
Anyway, I still need to find out if there is a simple way to recover
from this mess or if I need to wipe the whole thing and start over.
How do I discover what-all is corrupted and needs to be replaced, and
what (if anything) is still OK?

Ok, to upgrade setup, download a new one from
http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe.

Are you aware that 'install from internet' also makes the install sets
available?

Install from Local Directory
next screen unchanged (root C:\cygwin, all users, Unix files)
next screen unchanged (local pkg dir C:\download\cygwin)
Here it suggests upgrading setup, but doesn't provide a means to do so.
Select to install the newly-downloaded packages.
It started to install, then died.
> Why did you run a two-step install?
To have the install sets available for setting up other machines,
or for reinstalling this one if (when!) Windoze gets hosed.

About a month ago, I downloaded and installed a fairly minimal Cygwin
subset. Tonight, I downloaded some additional packages. When I
attempted to install them, setup produced a message box:
Can't open (null) for reading: No such file
Retrying the installation yields the same message.
I found a couple of mentions of this message in the archives, but no
explanation of what causes it or how to fix it. (I infer from the
context that everyone involved in the discussion knows exactly what
is going on, so no explanations are needed.)
Is any recovery possible, or must I wipe the entire installation and
start over?
BTW I tried to post this to cygwin-apps as requested on the web page,
but it bounced.
