I was rather surprised at the cumbersome nature of the Cygwin mailing lists.
There are difficult to manage, and the fact that all mails appear in your
mailbox, whether related to a post or not is, not what I would have
expected. The Cygwin environment is very comprehensive, but something as
simple as a poor support system (and compared with all the others I use,
this is poor) can restrict interest.

Sorry to be critical, but I was taken a-back. Is it going to be improved by
using a newsgroup for example?

Regards
Stephen Ford

Stephen,

Gmane has a Cygwin list mirroring group. The consensus among the users
and especially the doers is that a mailing list suits Cygwin best.

This is an old and recurring topic. Please review the copious postings
that have gone before. If you have something genuinely new to
contribute, then let us know about it.

As far as Cygwin "support" goes, it's primarily supplies by the user
community, with authoritative input from the principals and package
maintainers, who monitor this list closely.

A "mailing list" uses "email" for its communication mechanism.

Apparently either you or your email reader lacks the skills to do the
filtering required to put cygwin mailing list traffic into a separate
folder. I'd suggest that you probably should investigate how to do
this. That's how I, and countless other people read the cygwin mailing
list. If you do a google search for the term "mailing list" I think
you'll see that this is a pretty popular method for disseminating
information so getting email software that do this type of filtering for
you and learning how to use it will be beneficial.

I see that the announcement of the gmane cygwin newsgroup has fallen off
the bottom of the main cygwin web page so I can't in good conscience use
my usual "use the web page" rebuke. You can find a link to it on this
page, however: http://cygwin.com/news.html .

I assume that this will satisfy your needs. If it doesn't we'll cheerfully
refund your purchase price.

The first thing that crossed my mind when I saw Cristopher's name at
the end of the thread was "OK, here's cgf come to point this guy to the
FAQ..." :)))))))))))))))))))

Anyway, is it just me or is Cristopher in rather good spirits these
past few days? Must be due to the new snapshot. :)

Anyway, keep up the good work (and great, if sometimes biting, humor):
I just had the unusual opportunity to convert a friend from MS's
Services For Unix over to Cygwin, and he's prototyping like mad on it.
;)

R.

P.S.: anyone know of a good (free) NFS client for Windows XP, btw?
That's the only thing he's missing so far.

Hmm, maybe gmane should be added to the FAQ (not Cygwin's, but the list
page, I guess)...

I'm going to add a link on the main cygwin page. Then when someone says
"I find Cygwin's FAQ and documentation archaic. I fail to find a
reference to a cygwin newsgroup!" I can say "I fail to understand how
you missed the obvious link on the main web page".

Heh, heh, heh. Mean? You bet.

I have to point out that all I'm working on right now is the
server end of things. If you know of an existing NFS client,
though, you might be able to get it working under cygwin now.
