This started happening around March 23, no problems with screen before
then. Since then using GNU screen (4.00.03) and trying to backspace by
hitting the backspace key results in nothing happening. The cursor
doesn't move, the character isn't erased and the command remains the
same (if you hit Enter whatever your typo was gets the usual error).
However, pressing CTRL-H does do a backspace correctly. Could this be
related to the termcap changes from [^H] to [^?]? I have searched the
forums and googled around;  found a few hits, that didn't work, and no
solutions.

I just tried screen with 1.7.4 and what you described worked fine.
But I noticed your installation is incomplete and you're still running
1.7.1. Please download a new 'setup.exe' from cygwin.com and try
reinstalling all of your packages. This should solve that problem
at least.

Uh oh, this is most likely due to the change for allowing the
backspace keycode to be set using 'stty erase' (which I'd suggested).
I can reproduce the problem from 1.7.2 onwards. The backspace key is
sending ^@ (i.e. 0x00), same as previously happened with CYGWIN=tty in
1.7.1 snapshots. So it looks like the termios structure that the
keyboard handling reads isn't getting initialised in this case.

Workarounds: Add 'set CYGWIN=tty' to Cygwin.bat (or wherever you're
starting your session from), or use one of the other terminals.

If setting CYGWIN=tty affects the setting of the backspace key for ptys
then that's a bug in Cygwin. You really should *not* be setting
CYGWIN=tty for applications like mintty, rxvt, xterm, ssh, screen, etc.,
which use ptys. Really.

The issue only affects the specific case of 'screen' running in the
console without 'tty' in the CYGWIN settings: the backspace key sends
^@ instead of what's set in the console's stty settings. Yes, I assume
it's a Cygwin bug.

Since setting CYGWIN=tty is pretty much equivalent to running under a
pty I'd say that it could actually be a screen bug.

Regardless, I hate for this to become entrenched in Cygwin lore.
Setting CYGWIN=tty should not be viewed as a solution and I want to make
very sure that the archives reflect that.

Nope, you're right. It's a Cygwin bug. I'm fixing it now.

I'm not 100% sure that this is the right fix but the new snapshot at
least works around the problem.

The problem is that screen explicitly sets VERASE to 0. I believe that
it does that to mean "there is really no erase character since I'm
handling that". That should not cause Cygwin to send a null character.
I think it should probably just send the default \177 character.

So that is the change I've made.

Thanks.

You're right. Zero is the value of the _POSIX_VDISABLE constant for
disabling special characters. Therefore, using c_cc[VERASE] as the
backspace keycode was a bad idea all along. Sorry for suggesting it in
the first place.

> That should not cause Cygwin to send a null character.

Makes sense given the botched design, but of course it does mean that
the user's backspace keycode setting is ignored. Also, 'screen' would
be expecting what was set in c_cc[VERASE] as the backspace keycode.

I can think of two ways to fix the design. One would be to introduce a
CYGWIN flag for switching from the default ^? to ^H, named something
like 'backspace_sends_bs', 'legacy_bs' or 'bs_is_ctrl_h'. Another
would be to implement the DECBKM ("DEC Backarrow Key Mode") control
sequence for the purpose, which is also supported by xterm and mintty:

\e[?67h Backspace key sends ^H
\e[?67l Backspace key sends ^?

Uh, no. I made it send \177 when c_cc[VERASE] is 0. Screen is just
forwarding characters along so it doesn't care.

That would be surprising. If you set VEARSE to 0 on Linux, a following
tcgetattr returns 0 as the VERASE value. stty prints "<undef>". The
same holds true for other settings like VKILL, VINTR, etc. So, if the
process sets VERASE to 0, and is then puzzled to get a 0 VERASE value
from the OS, it's the application's fault.

I think I see what you mean now. The c_cc[VERASE] value is the one
which is expected for the VERASE functionality (unless it's set to
0 == _POSIX_VDISABLE), but it has nothing to do with the actual setting
of the backspace key in the terminal. So, actually the key value should
not be stored in c_cc[VERASE] at all, and it should not be possible to
set the value returned by the backspace key via tcsetattr.

So, what we really need to implement is what you proposed. I prepared
a patch, see below. It seems to work nicely and you can easily switch
the backspace character now via the DECBKM escape codes. If everybody
agrees with this solution, I'll check it in.

Corinna

	* fhandler.h (class dev_console): Add backspace_keycode member.
	* fhandler_console.cc (fhandler_console::get_tty_stuff): Initialize
	backspace_keycode with CERASE.
	(fhandler_console::read): Return dev_state->backspace_keycode if the
	backspace key is pressed.
	(fhandler_console::char_command): Implement DECBKM escape sequence.

It sounds as though no change is required in screen for this. I trust someone
will let me know if it turns out otherwise.

screen is an ancient program from the dim mists of early terminal days, so I'm
not surprised that it has some problems of this kind. I understand very little
of its internals myself, but I know that an aspirational version 4 has been in
development for a long time and that a lot of this sort of problem has been
cleaned up.

True, because someone might want to use a completely different key for
VERASE. The case I had in mind though was the user setting 'stty erase
^H', to get ^H as the backspace keycode, but then finding that it
would send ^? again when in screen, even though 'stty -a' would still
show ^H. Anyways ...

Nice. The patch looks good to me, and I agree DECBKM is a better
solution than a CYGWIN option, because it's standard and because it
can be used in remote scripts.

Correct.

Don't worry, screen isn't doing anything wrong here. Setting the
VERASE key on the console device to _POSIX_VDISABLED (i.e., zero) is
perfectly legitimate, it's the console using that as the backspace
keycode that caused the problem.

The patch is to cygwin1.dll. You can grab it from a snapshot now if

And there's really no need for this repeated header information. It's

And you still have 1.7.1 installed according to your cygcheck output.
Did 'setup.exe' say it was getting the new one? Perhaps you need to
try a reboot before the next reinstall.

I deleted my entire Cygwin installation, got setup.exe from cygwin.com
and reinstalled. No change, when I launch screen everything works
except for the backspace key. Pressing Ctrl-H causes a backspace.
Outside of screen things are fine.
