What's the conv=sync parameter to dd for? There's no need to pad NULs
to ibs-size, is there?
I'm not sure how eCos is setup, but I have an interesting idea.
I was thinking, the image of RedBoot could be loaded into a reserved
part of RAM. Then, once this is done, hook Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart eCos
from that image instead of restart the computer? Some part of RAM could
be reserved for this image. Wouldn't it be as simple as creating a boot
sector that does this, and then continuing to load eCos normally? We
could reserve the boot sector for the program that does this!
That would be a lot faster booting! :) Maybe it's already been done?
