Could someone give me a copy of i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc
for linux, I couldn't compile to get a copy, though
I can get i386-elf-gcc.

There should already be one on your system. Assuming you are compiling for
the linux synthetic target, you can instead try changing
CYGBLD_GLOBAL_PREFIX in your eCos configuration to be empty, i.e. "".
