Stuart,
what do you mean with 'I put in the folder 'packages/io/eth' ...' ?
You have to patch eth drivers with ioeth.diff - the old lwip eth driver
which
comes with eCos has the netdev table boundaries defines in it, this defines
were moved to net/lwip_tcpip/current/src/ecos/init.c in new lwip
distributions.

Thanks see what you mean, bit new to all this, thanks for pointing this out,
application builds without error now.
Do you now if the lwip stack can support two network interfaces on the
target such as an Ethernet interface, and a PPP interface. Also do you know
if any example code of using PPP exists.
