Hi all,
Could somebody tell me, which compiler versions and which version of the 
toolchain really works ?
(binutils, gcc+newlib, gdb ?)

On my FreeBSD 6.x system I'm using gcc-3.4.5 and binutils-2.16.1, newlib 
1.14 and bison-2.1  and it has been working fine.

(HAL target i386 though, you mileage may vary, wonder if I should to an 
eCOS port to the VAX architecture ...)
