But that's an implementation detail. I as a user don't care if the
various git subcommands are implemented in seperate binaries or a
single multi-function binary.

Again, the working set (E.G. common commands) are pretty similar:

svn help|wc -l
47

git help|wc -l
26

hg help|wc -l
67
