assign does not work as documented.

(fhpd) help assign
assign scalar-target scalar-value [-force] -option ...; where options 
are:
  -format       print format
  -location     print the expression's location
  -raw          print the expression's raw value
  -tree         print the expression's AST
  -type         print the expression's type
  -value        print the expression's value (default)
(fhpd) assign n 20

Error: invalid expression at: 20)
(fhpd) assign n=20
Error: missing expression
(fhpd) assign n = 20
20
