Ah, it's gradually coming back to me! There *are* online versions of
the specs for most of these file formats, available from Intel. Look
at:
ftp://ftp.intel.com/pub/tis
or ftp://ftp.intel.com/pub/IAL/TIS
Note that any ".gps" files there seem to really be ".zip" files.
Here's the overview of what's there, from the /pub/IAL/libdir.txt file:
