Summary: std::string as template argument no longer works
Product: gcc
Version: 3.4
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: c++
AssignedTo: unassigned at gcc dot gnu dot org
ReportedBy: James dot W dot Mckelvey at jpl dot nasa dot gov
CC: gcc-bugs at gcc dot gnu dot org
GCC build triplet: sparc-sun-solaris2.7
GCC host triplet: sparc-sun-solaris2.7
GCC target triplet: sparc-sun-solaris2.7
This error was introduced a few weeks ago. The problem is not in class X, but in
template class Y creating an object of class X using a std::string template
argument. If Y is made non-template, the error disappears.
This code also works on the Compaq cxx and others, so I'm convinced it's a bug.

------- Additional Comments From bangerth at dealii dot org 2003-08-07 18:46 -------
Indeed, I can confirm this on linux as well. Here's a smaller snippet:
----------------------------
extern const int a;
template <const int&> class X {};
template <typename> struct Y {
X<a> x;
};
template struct Y<int>;
----------------------------
g/x> /home/bangerth/bin/gcc-3.4-pre/bin/c++ -c x.cc
x.cc: In instantiation of `Y<int>':
x.cc:9: instantiated from here
x.cc:6: error: could not convert template argument `&a' to `const int&'
This used to work, but doesn't anymore. Since it only happens if Y is
a template class, it seems as if this may have something to do with
two-stage name lookup.

Just a further clue that this might have something to do with
two-stage name lookup: if I make the variable template
dependent, then the code compiles again. Here's an example:
---------------------------
template <typename T> struct A {
static const T a;
};
template <const int&> class X {};
template <typename T> struct Y {
X<A<T>::a> x;
};
template struct Y<int>;
-----------------------------------

The regression in PR 11847 was introduced or exposed by this patch:
--- gcc/gcc/cp/ChangeLog ---
2003-07-07 Mark Mitchell <mark@codesourcery.com>
* cp-tree.h (build_scoped_method_call): Remove.
(lookup_qualified_name): Remove parameter.
(tsubst_copy_and_build): Declare.
[lots more]
The regression hunt took place on i686-pc-linux-gnu using the test
case from comment #1.
This is the same patch that introduced the regression in PR 11834.
