I've installed gcc-3.4-20040211 on a Pentium M-machine and try to crosscompile
for any 64-bit target because I want to check if my program would compile.
Targets I've tried are: alpha, mips, ia64
Neither of them completes the crosscompilation, but for different reasons. See
the error-messages further below.
- For alpha it seems to be a problem with the assembler.
- For mips the compiler doesn't have the option -EB
- For ia64 the assembler misses the option -x
Did I miss an important step before starting the gcc-build? Here is my
configure-output for the alpha-target:
joachim@toshiba:~/Documents/gcc-3.4-20040211/build_alpha2> ../configure

Do you have the appropriate cross-assemblers installed? If no, the errors are
normal.

I know that you do not have the cross binutils installed, install them first.

Hi,
Now I've installed binutils for alpha, mips and ia64. The compilation now
fails at other places. Any other hints?

Summarizing the last errors: Includefiles are not found:
For alpha: signal.h, sys/ucontext.h
For mips: pthread.h, unistd.h
For ia64: stdlib.h
Where to get them? (Why is /usr/include not used?)

I assume that the missing headers are from glibc-2.3.2, but to build it, I
need gcc, which can't be built because of missing headers.
How should I solve this? Is this documented somewhere? (I can't find it.)

Do a google search for building a linux cross-compiler. You need headers (and libraries) from the
system you're targetting. See <http://bytesex.org/cross-compiler.html> for general info. See --with-
sysroot or --with-libs and --with-headers option in the install docs too (you will need them) <http://
gcc.gnu.org/install/configure.html>. Bottom line is that cross-compiling most definitely does work, but
you need a bit of setup before hand to make it happy... Dan Kegel's crosstool may also be helpful. We
already have another open bug for the out-of-date/missing documentation on all this.

Dan Kegel's crosstool (http://kegel.com/crosstool/) did the job for me and was
rather easy to use. Thanks for pointing it out.
IMHO you should at least provide this and the other links on the gcc-homepage
under Installation or FAQ.
Cheers,
Joachim
