The --enable-maintainer mode configure option for libgfortran only works 
properly if you know the magic handshake, and the moon is in the correct 
phase.

I don't think so.  Several people have used it, and noone complained about weird
things happening.

To be more precise, on i686-pc-linux-gnu, I created an empty directory, cd'd
into it, and then ran

../gcc-4.0/configure --prefix=$HOME --enable-maintainer-mode
--enable-languages=c,f95
make bootstrap

Same thing for 4.1.
