Jim Wilson pointed out the real problem in http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2004-04/msg01227.html There is a proposed patch at http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2004-04/msg01754.html That's for the 3.4 branch.
