I tried this patch with gcc-3.5-20040523, and the problem was still
there, for both the reduced test case, and a variant (work around PR
15243) of the original testcase.
I also tried this patch with gcc-core-3.5-20040704, and it applies
cleanly, but then produces a compilation error:
