There has been traffic on the avr-gcc-list mailing list that suggests that this
is a regression against the 3.4 series:

Please note that Joerg Wunsch who did the testing in the first message above is
the FreeBSD maintainer of the AVR toolset.

The ABI for the AVR toolset is described here:
