If I run gcc test.c test -O3 -march=pentium4 -mcpu=pentium4 -mtune=pentium4
-pipe this appears:
/tmp/ccLVma0j.o: No space left on device
{standard input}: Assembler messages:

test.c:

while (x < 1000000)

}

printf ("\n%lu\n",clock());

Have you checked whether that might be because there is, um, no space left
on the device?

It seems gcc is the source of error. After rebooting everything works fine. And
after inserting the ram I just run the startup daeons and gcc.

Invalid as as is not part of the GCC project at all but binutils.

This stil looks a problem on your side rather than the programs side.

I think gcc doesn't free the memory. And this test programm needs a lot memory
and if you run the programm some times there's no space left on the memory
device. So this is a bug. Gcc has to free the memory if the programm is executed.

Firstly, I don't see gcc using a lot of memory for this test case. How
much do you see it using? How much real and virtual memory do you have?

Secondly, freeing memory shortly before gcc is about to die would be
a bad idea, since that might force the OS to page in old cruft, whereas
it can do a much more efficient job of cleaning up if gcc just dies as
a whole.
