If gcj is called while the environment variable CLASSPATH contains backslashes
instead of slashes, jc1 (called by gcj) hangs without any error message. Could
gcj/jc1 be made "backslash tolerant"?

You'll have to provide more details than this.
What platform are you trying this on? What was the
value of CLASSPATH when you saw this? Et cetera.
FWIW, when I checked the current mainline on
Linux with a CLASSPATH containing backslashes
it did not hang.
