When running the testsuite for GCC 4.0.1 RC 2

I get the following error:

FAIL: abi_check

The above testsuite failure does not occur with 
GCC 4.0-20050616 snapshot

What binutils are you using? Can you attach the libstdc++.log after you do "make
check-abi'?

The log file indicates that symbol versioning is turned off. This is most
probably due to an old version of binutils.

You should see this when configuring libstdc++:

configure: versioning on shared library symbols is gnu

I'm guessing you don't see this message, and instead see a warning that details
what I just described.

You can tell the exact version number of ld by issuing:

ld --version

Looking through my build log it shows:

configure: WARNING: === Linker version 21500 is too old for
configure: WARNING: === full symbol versioning support in this release 
of GCC.
configure: WARNING: === You would need to upgrade your binutils to 
version
configure: WARNING: === 21590 or later and rebuild GCC.
configure: WARNING: === Symbol versioning will be disabled.

I think it may be a good idea to abort build compared to building it and
generating a testsuite failure.

Why, libstdc++ and the new compiler still works, you just don't get symbol versioning at all.

I know do not get symbol versioning but what is causing the testsuite then?

This isn't a critical error. I think the warning is pretty clear. 

However, it is true that without symbol versioning, 'make check-abi' is pretty
useless. The attached patch corrects this.
