Gaby, would that be OK with you?

I'd revert the patch for PR 18445 on the 3.4 branch, add the testcase
for PR18803 to the 3.4 branch (bootstrapped and regtested, of course),
and close PR 18445 as fixed in 4.0.0 and WONTFIX in 3.4.
