I'd like to suggest that this new subject line is mis-leading: The compiler doesn't place ANY object in .rodata . It's not necessary to have a "non-trivial" constructor. E.g. have a look at the constructors of the complex class template. There isn't any statement in the constructor. There is only the initialization of the member POD for the real and imaginary parts.
