Can you please try this with -fno-tree-sra? If you have a revision
earlier than 147980 (new SRA) at hand, can you try that with
-fno-tree-sra? Thanks.
I'll try to reproduce this on gcc61 at the compile farm but it's gonna
take time to build (and I will be only able to help you if the bug is
indeed caused by SRA - there have been already cases where the old SRA
merely hid some bugs elsewhere).

The testcase compiles without an ICE using -fno-tree-sra with 147980.
I'll rebuild 147979.

In the 'ch' pass, we have:
<bb 2>:
a.85 = a;
SR.155_25 = b._M_value;
...
This gets transformed in the 'cplxlower' pass to
<bb 2>:
a.85 = a;
SR.155$real_7 = REALPART_EXPR <b.86._M_value>;
SR.155$imag_1 = IMAGPART_EXPR <b.86._M_value>;
However, b.86 is not declared or assigned in the gimple.

Right. The number in identifiers I see are different, of course, but
what happens is this. Early SRA replaces structure b.3 with
SR.4_25. In BB2, it is assigned into from parameter b:
SR.4_25 = b._M_value;
This assignment survives until complex lowering which expands it into:
SR.4$real_7 = REALPART_EXPR <b.3._M_value>;
SR.4$imag_1 = IMAGPART_EXPR <b.3._M_value>;
SR.4_25 = COMPLEX_EXPR <SR.4$real_7, SR.4$imag_1>;
Note that the b.3 is back, although it should have died long time
ago and that leads to the varasm ICE.
What is even more weird however, is how tree-complex.c comes upon that
variable. In extract_component() it correctly builds rhs
REALPART_EXPR <b._M_value> but then it feeds it into
force_gimple_operand_gsi() which in turns inserts the bogus statements
into the stream.
So that is where to look now, I suppose. I wonder how come the
behavior is target specific, though. Well, let me see.

The long-dead declaration is brought back to life by the following
line in gimplify_var_or_parm_decl() in gimplify.c:
tree value_expr = DECL_VALUE_EXPR (decl);
I don't know why that happens yet.

workaround patch
I still believe that the gimplifier should not do this substitution
this late in the compilation. However, since I do not have time nor
am I brave enough to attempt to fix it there, I at least tried to make
sure that SRA does not create situations which lead to this error and
the attached patch is the result of that effort. I am currently
bootstrapping it on an x86_64.
However, it should be noted that it comes at a slight cost, both in
run time as this leads to less structure copy propagation (and at
least java uses DECL_VALUE_EXPR even on x86_64, I believe) and compile
time, as we have to check for it everywhere. Moreover, every single
user of force_gimple_operand is still at risk of running into a
problem like this.

------- Comment #12 from jamborm at gcc dot gnu dot org 2009-09-03 19:09 -------
As Richard Henderson pointed out, declarations with DECL_VALUE_EXPR
should not appear in the function body at all. I have filed bug 41250
about this.

------- Comment #14 from jamborm at gcc dot gnu dot org 2010-04-06 13:22 -------
I don't see this failure in any of the recent retest results of hppa
(I've looked at http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-testresults/2010-04/msg00422.html
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-testresults/2010-04/msg00417.html and
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-testresults/2010-04/msg00410.html).
Therefore I think that it is fixed by the fix for PR 41250. Please
reopen if I am wrong.
