* [Bug debug/45419]  New: -fcompare-debug failure at -O3

Command line:
$ gcc -fcompare-debug -O3 testcase-min6.i

Compiler output:
$ gcc -fcompare-debug -O3 testcase-min6.i -w
gcc: error: testcase-min6.i: -fcompare-debug failure (length)

Tested revisions:
r163468 - fail
r162940 - OK
r161659 - OK
r161170 - OK

The failure keeps appearing and disappearing when little changes are made - in
the original testcase, even removing -pipe or adding -save-temps caused the
failure to disappear.

Delta (with line granularity) fails to reduce the file further. The difference
in debug and non-debug runs is very small:

I can't reproduce it on Fedora 13. But valgrind reports:

Unfortunately can't reproduce it myself, neither with bootstrapped, nor with
just stage1 built gcc.

Thank you for answers! This not yet reduced testcase fails in a similiar way
(r163468, x86_64-linux). It needs only -O2 to reproduce.

------- Comment #8 from jakub at gcc dot gnu dot org 2010-08-30 14:05 -------
The other issue comes from MEM_ATTRS caching.
mem_attrs_htab_eq
considers MEM_EXPR to be equal if:
279  && (p->expr == q->expr
280      || (p->expr != NULL_TREE && q->expr != NULL_TREE
281  && operand_equal_p (p->expr, q->expr, 0))));

With -g there happens to be a different MEM_ATTRS in the cache than without -g,
and as both are operand_equal_p, gcc doesn't care which one it chooses.

As -fcompare-debug does a textual comparison, I guess we'd for
-fdump-final-insns need to dump something that is stable. E.g. it could print
just iterative_hash_expr (MEM_EXPR (memref), 0) instead of printing the
expression. I'm not sure whether that would fix this completely, because
I believe if there are collisions, mem_attrs_htab_eq could return true even if
mem_attrs_htab_hash is different. Therefore perhaps mem_attrs_htab_eq should
also check (size_t) iterative_hash_expr (p->expr, 0) == (size_t)
iterative_hash_expr (q->expr, 0) if operand_equal_p returned true.

------- Comment #9 from jakub at gcc dot gnu dot org 2010-08-30 14:29 -------
Unfortunately printing iterative_hash_expr for MEM_EXPR if final_insns_dump_p
is actually worse, because iterative_hash_expr uses DECL_UID, which isn't
guaranteed to be the same between -g and -g0.
So, either we shouldn't print MEM_EXPR at all for final_insns_dump_p, or come
up with iterative_hash_expr alternative which doesn't hash using DECL_UIDs, but
DECL_NAME.

Or dump MEM_EXPR caching?

Richard.

------- Comment #12 from aoliva at gcc dot gnu dot org 2010-09-02 12:21 -------
'been looking into this as well. cp/pt.c -fcompare-debug fails for me on
x86_64-linux-gnu.

I'm not sure yet why we get different different types for the integer_csts in
operand 0 of MEM_REFs, but it occurred to me that we could add a flag to
operand_equal_p to check that all types are the same. Ideally, we'd have
corresponding flags for hashing as well, but not necessarly for correctness.

------- Comment #13 from aoliva at gcc dot gnu dot org 2010-09-03 08:59 -------
The different types arise when, say, we copyprop a const-unqualified variable
into a MEM_REF that used to reference a const-qualified temp.  The top-level
const qualifications are irrelevant at that point, for we're dealing with
rvalues of pointer types. I'm experimenting with simply dropping the
TYPE_QUALS test from tree-pretty-print.  This fixed the pt.c -fcompare-debug
problem. Richard, is there any reason for top-level qualifiers to be relevant
in MEM_REF operands?

Hmm, not really. But in the end at some point I want to drop the
fancy printing of MEM_REFs.

What you can do is instead of

            dump_generic_node (buffer, TREE_TYPE (TREE_OPERAND (node, 1)),
                               spc, flags | TDF_SLIM, false);

do

            dump_generic_node (buffer, TYPE_MAIN_VARIANT (TREE_TYPE
(TREE_OPERAND (node, 1))),
                               spc, flags | TDF_SLIM, false);

as that is what matters. Or even better, see if the issue goes away
when you change the gimplifier to use the main variant in the first
place. That's sth I would prefer - not sure why I missed that.

Richard.
