Testcase:
#define SIZE 1024
While looking into why manually SRA'd testcase worked better. I found this
interesting problem.
Take:
struct a
{
  long long b;
  a();
};
a f(a &g, a &h)
{
  int i;
  a res = g;
  for (i = 0; i < SIZE; i++)
    res.b += h.b;
  return res;
}

at -O2 we change res here to <retval> so we have <retval> in the inner loop.
If we supply -fno-elide-constructors which disables NVR in C++ front-end, we
get good code of doing loop based Copy Prop (SCEV copy prop) as we able to pull
out res.b. The issue is that we say h can alias <retval> but we don't say the
same thing for res though.

------- Comment #1 from rguenth at gcc dot gnu dot org 2008-05-13 08:43 -------
Confirmed on 32bit targets.

SMT.6, UID D.1708, struct a, is addressable, is global, score: 320004, direct
reads: 0, direct writes: 0, indirect reads: 2, indirect writes: 0, call
clobbered (is global var, is incoming pointer), may aliases: { <retval> }
<retval>, UID D.1678, struct a, is addressable, score: 1280052, direct reads:
2, direct writes: 2, indirect reads: 2, indirect writes: 0, call clobbered (is
global var, is incoming pointer)

It's easy to hack flow-insensitive aliasing to say that RESULT_DECL isn't
really
addressable (which is the difference here I believe) - but it is harder to
argue that this doesn't ever go wrong ;)

With that we get

a f(a&, a&) (struct a & g, struct a & h)
{
  long long int pretmp.12;

<bb 2>:
  pretmp.12 = h->b;
  <retval>.b = (pretmp.12 + g->b) + pretmp.12 * 1023;
  return <retval>;

}

Now onto why the following is safe...

------- Comment #3 from rguenth at gcc dot gnu dot org 2008-05-13 11:41 -------
The patch isn't really correct, but the problem is that the fact that <result>
is marked addressable is causing flow-insensitive analysis to say that the
incoming pointers can alias it.

Also incoming pointers don't get useful constraints for PTA - they should get
&NONLOCAL (err, ok - we had that once ;)). Or we can simply prune the
points-to set after the fact.

------- Comment #5 from pinskia at gcc dot gnu dot org 2008-12-31 21:11 -------
Actually this testcase is regression because of the removal of SFTs. in
4.1-4.3, the loop did not exist.
In fact I filed this bug right after SFTs were removed.

The reason why it is considered addressable is because of:
/* Return true if T is a GIMPLE variable whose address is not needed. */

bool
is_gimple_non_addressable (tree t)
{
  if (TREE_CODE (t) == SSA_NAME)
    t = SSA_NAME_VAR (t);

  return (is_gimple_variable (t) && ! needs_to_live_in_memory (t));
}

needs_to_live_in_memory is true because of

  return (TREE_ADDRESSABLE (t)
          || is_global_var (t)
          || (TREE_CODE (t) == RESULT_DECL
              && aggregate_value_p (t, current_function_decl)));

And aggregate_value_p is true because of:
  if (TREE_CODE (exp) == CALL_EXPR && fndecl && DECL_RESULT (fndecl)
      && DECL_BY_REFERENCE (DECL_RESULT (fndecl)))
    return 1;

DECL_BY_REFERENCE is true because this is a nonPOD.

Fixed on the alias-improvements branch:

a f(a&, a&) (struct a & g, struct a & h)
{
  long long int pretmp.24;

<bb 2>:
  # .MEM_12 = VDEF <.MEM_11(D)>
  <retval> = *g;
  # VUSE <.MEM_12>
  pretmp.24 = h->b;
  # .MEM_7 = VDEF <.MEM_12>
  <retval>.b = [plus_expr] (pretmp.24 + <retval>.b) + pretmp.24 * 1023;
  # VUSE <.MEM_7>
  return <retval>;

}
