I was trying to use make clean to clean up after a successful bootstrap and
install.

The error message (and nearby messages) are as follows:
make[1]: Entering directory
`/home/cpowers/src/gcc-4.4.0-obj/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/libgcc'
make[1]: -print-multi-directory: Command not found
make[1]: -print-multi-os-directory: Command not found

 Stop.
