Summary: Wrong name of a programming language used
           Product: gcc
           Version: unknown
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: web
        AssignedTo: unassigned@gcc.gnu.org
        ReportedBy: tg@mirbsd.org

Hi,

both http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.6/changes.html and
today’s http://gcc.gnu.org/index.html#news pretend
GCC has gained support for the Go programming lan-
guage, whereas it has only gained support for the
Google-Go programming language instead, according
to what I read.

Please see (I hate to point to Wikipedia, but that’s
illustrating the problem) the information at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go!_(programming_language)
and correct the attribution. The Go language not in
GCC has been around far longer and as such earlier
naming rights, and it’s wrong for the FSF / GCC-SC
to follow a vendor’s attempt of this hostile takeover.

Thanks in advance!

The naming similarity is unfortunate. However, there are many computing
products and services named Go. In the 13 months since the release of Google's
Go langage, there has been minimal confusion of the two languages.

This doesn’t change the fact that it’s not _right_ for Google to do that.
I’ve read the term “steamrolling” in Issue 9 later and find it fitting.

I also think that someone working for Google should not be able to close
this bug as WONTFIX due to a conflict of interests.

Call it Google-Go or World of… well, taken. Or Issue 9. The compiler
frontend probably can stay named gccgo.

I think it is ok for Google to call their language what ever they feel fit. If
go is a reference it is a reference to the game anyways. Remember there is a
go game and guess what that was first.

Oh and GNU go exists already :) So using go as a programming language name it
is going to be pretty much easy to find different names for different
programming langauges.
