Reduced test case: The crucial point is the GENERIC interface.

interface gen
  procedure foo
end interface gen

integer :: bar(2)
bar = gen()

contains
  function foo()
    integer, allocatable :: foo(:)
    allocate(foo(2))
  end function foo
end
