The following program compiles fine with gfortran 4.7.2, but when executed it
segfaults.
program crash
TYPE mytype
CHARACTER(LEN=42), ALLOCATABLE :: str_value
END TYPE mytype
TYPE(mytype), POINTER :: a => Null()
ALLOCATE(a)
end program crash

Instead of nullifying (internally) the "str_value", the compiler tries to set
the unallocated string to the value 0 followed by space padding.
The call path is: gfc_trans_structure_assign -> gfc_trans_subcomponent_assign
-> gfc_trans_scalar_assign -> gfc_trans_string_copy.
I think the issue is effectively the same as PR57959
