I'll be able to fix this during next week, so if nobody is available to solve this sooner, then please assign it to me. Regarding the global register variables, it's a GNU C extension (see https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Explicit-Reg-Vars.html), but I think it should be rejected when compiling in strict mode (e.g. -ansi or -std=c++14). I think this should be filed as a separate issue.
