It is.  The problem is read.o is looking for a data symbol.  Need to look at
libgfortran(read.o):

/usr/ccs/bin/ld: Unsatisfied symbols:
   strtoflt128 (first referenced in
/test/gnu/gcc/objdir/hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.11/./libgfortran/.libs/libgfortran.a(read.o))
(data)

There's a missing declaration for strtoflt128.
