That would require editing the doc sources for every release, which isn't going
to happen.

That would work for the online docs, not necessarily when users build them and
read them locally.

If you have a relative URL like href="../../api/namespaces.html" then it only
works if the user has the API docs at that relative location.

If you have an absolute URL like
href="https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-10.2.0/libstdc++/manual/manual/../../api/namespaces.html"
then I don't see any advantage to your suggestion, since it still needs the
"gcc-10.2.0" version in the URL, which requires modifying the docs for each
release as I said (or fixing them up in the
maintainer-scripts/generate_libstdcxx_web_docs script).

Why wouldn’t locally installed documentation have the API book at the same
relative location?
