Back in ye olden days with gcc-2.95 and earlier, we were compiling on ultra-sparc (and that's of course here my heart and true knowledge is), we'd compile with gcc flags of -g -O2 -mcpu=v8 -mtune=ultra-sparc

Nowadays we're on Linux on Pentium 4 and P4 Xeon processors.  What are the best compiler flags to be using on this platform?  I can't seem to find a combination that makes gcc happy!

Thanks,

-brian
